What Is Tetrabutylurea?
Tetrabutylurea is a substituted urea solvent used in anthraquinone-process hydrogen peroxide working solutions. Selection should consider working-material solubility, solvent compatibility and the operating requirements of the plant, rather than treating one solvent as a universal replacement for another.
The local TDS requires at least 99.5% TBU and limits di-n-butylamine and water each to 0.10%. Density is specified at 20°C, colour on the platinum-cobalt scale, and interfacial tension against water at 20°C. These properties support like-for-like solvent purchasing and process trials.
The matched substance reference identifies a combustible liquid with a closed-cup flash point of 93°C. It lists non-dangerous-goods transport for IMDG and IATA, while its US DOT entry uses NA 1993 for a combustible liquid. The SDS keeps this regional difference visible; non-dangerous-goods sea/air status does not remove fire precautions.
