What Is PTSA?
PTSA in this product means the tetrasodium salt of pyrene-1,3,6,8-tetrasulfonic acid. It is a fluorescent tracer used to monitor selected water-treatment chemical dosing and process-water behaviour. It should not be confused with p-toluenesulfonic acid, another substance sometimes abbreviated PTSA.
The supply specification controls assay by HPLC at not less than 98%, water not above 0.5% and insoluble matter not above 0.1%. Formula and molecular weight are given on an anhydrous tetrasodium-salt basis; hydration changes the formula mass. These are not the formula or mass of a dilute tracer solution.
Evaluate fluorescence calibration, background interference and compatibility with the actual water, treatment package and instrument. Tracer response does not by itself prove biocidal performance or corrosion control. The Fluorochem reference classifies this powder as non-dangerous goods for ADR, IMDG and IATA, with skin, eye and respiratory-irritation precautions.
