Handling & Protection
Control powder transfer with local extraction. Avoid airborne dust, use suitable gloves, eye protection and work clothing and prevent dust accumulation near ignition sources. Use appropriate respiratory protection where the exposure assessment requires it.
What Is Sulfonated Asphalt?
Sulfonated asphalt is an asphalt-derived complex material modified with sulfonate functionality. Water dispersibility and partial oil compatibility allow it to be evaluated in suitable drilling-fluid systems. Its complex composition is not represented by a single small-molecule formula or molecular weight.
The supply specification controls moisture at ≤8.0%, pH 8.0–9.0, DMSO-soluble matter ≥45%, water-soluble matter ≥75%, oil-soluble matter ≥28% and acid-insoluble matter ≤15%. The listed HTHP reduction result is ≥40 mL on the source test basis; it is not an absolute filtrate-volume limit.
In suitable drilling fluids, the material supports shale stabilization, filtercake characteristics and fluid-loss management. Performance depends on base fluid, salinity, solids, temperature and treatment level. Pilot testing should evaluate rheology, filtration and lubricity in the actual mud system.
The sodium asphalt sulfonate reference is non-dangerous goods for transport. Powder exposure and ignition controls remain necessary, and commercial asphalt products can vary in composition. Keep the material dry, use first-in first-out stock rotation and protect the original liners throughout storage.
