What Is Sodium Butyl Xanthate (SBX)?
Sodium butyl xanthate (SBX) is the sodium salt of n-butyl xanthic acid, identified by CAS 141-33-3, formula C5H9NaOS2 and molecular weight 172.24 g/mol. Its straight four-carbon chain gives strong collecting power for chalcopyrite, activated sphalerite and pyrite.
The supply specification sets xanthate purity at ≥90.0%, free alkali at ≤0.2% and moisture plus volatile matter at ≤4.0%. It is supplied as a free-flowing powder or pellets that dissolve in water for dosing. Dosage and addition point depend on the ore, liberation, pulp pH and the rest of the reagent scheme, so plants usually set them through bench tests and plant trials.
It ships as UN 3342, Xanthates, Class 4.2, packing group III. Keep it dry and away from acids, oxidizers and ignition sources: heat, acid and moisture speed decomposition and release carbon disulfide. Collector for chalcopyrite and related copper sulfides. The collector blend, pulp pH and addition sequence decide the balance between copper recovery and pyrite rejection.
Zinc and polymetallic ores
Collector for copper-activated sphalerite in lead-zinc and polymetallic circuits. Activation and depressant chemistry at each stage set the zinc concentrate grade.
Rubber and hydrometallurgy
Also used in rubber vulcanization and as a reagent in hydrometallurgical metal recovery. These uses need their own process qualification beyond the flotation specification.
