What Is Mannitol?
Mannitol, CAS 87-78-5, EC 201-770-2, C6H14O6, is a sugar alcohol with low hygroscopicity. It is used in sugar-free confectionery and chewing gum dusting, as a bulking agent, and in tablet manufacture.
The specification sets assay 97.0–102.0%, sorbitol ≤2.0%, maltitol and isomalt ≤2.0%, loss on drying ≤0.5% and total impurities ≤2.0%, with limits on reducing sugars and microbes.
It is not regulated as dangerous goods. Food use requires a grade and documents that meet the rules of the destination market.
