What Is Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS)?
Dimethyl Disulfide, also called methyl disulfide, is an organic disulfide with molecular formula C2H6S2 and molecular weight 94.20 g/mol. The molecule contains two sulfur atoms, providing a concentrated liquid sulfur source for professionally managed industrial processes. It has a strong characteristic odor, so odor control and closed handling are important in bulk use.
The current supply specification is purity ≥99.8%, sulfur ≥68%, water ≤0.05% and methyl mercaptan ≤0.01%. These current web limits are stricter than the local 2026 reference, which lists purity ≥99.5% and water ≤0.06%. The page and newly produced TDS consistently use the current web limits, while manufacturer physical properties remain reference values.
DMDS is used in catalyst presulfiding for hydrodesulfurization, hydrotreating and hydrocracking. Sulfur addition should follow the catalyst provider and unit operating procedure, considering sulfur demand, feed compatibility, temperature and process control. It is also a starting material for selected sulfur-containing chemical intermediates; there is no universal application dose.
The high-purity substance SDS identifies UN 2381, Class 3 with subsidiary Class 6.1 and packing group II. Bulk transport is also environmentally hazardous. The flammable and toxic liquid requires suitable containment, exposure control and dangerous-goods logistics during storage, transfer and shipment.
