What Is Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC)?
Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC, cellulose gum), CAS 9000-11-7, is a water-soluble cellulose polymer. It thickens, suspends and stabilizes in beverages, dairy, ice cream, sauces and bakery, and is used in toothpaste, detergents and drilling fluids.
The specification sets purity ≥99.5%, viscosity ≥1,000 mPa·s at 1%, degree of substitution 0.7–0.9 and pH 6.5–8.5 at 25°C. Compare viscosity at the same concentration and test conditions.
It is not regulated as dangerous goods. Food use requires a grade and documents that meet the rules of the destination market.
