What Is 2-Phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic Acid (PBTC)?
PBTC (2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid), CAS 37971-36-1, combines phosphonic and carboxylic acid groups in one molecule. It controls calcium carbonate scale at high hardness, alkalinity and temperature, and tolerates chlorine better than most phosphonates.
The TDS specifies active acid ≥50%, phosphorous acid ≤0.5%, phosphoric acid ≤0.2%, and iron and chloride each ≤10 ppm. pH is measured on a 1% solution and density at 20°C.
PBTC is used alone or with zinc salts and polymers in cooling-water, oilfield injection-water and cleaning formulations; the dose is set from water analysis and trials. The 50% solution ships as UN 3265, Class 8, packing group III.
