Dimethyl benzyl carbinol, CAS 100-86-7, is an aroma chemical also called 2-methyl-1-phenyl-2-propanol. The formula is C10H14O and molecular weight is 150.22 g/mol. It provides a mild floral and green note in selected fragrance bases.
The TDS specifies GC assay ≥99.0%, colour ≤40 APHA, specific gravity 0.971–0.977 at 25/25°C and refractive index 1.514–1.517 at 20°C. The material can appear as a liquid or low-melting solid near ambient temperature; this temperature-dependent form is consistent with its reference melting range of 23–25°C.
Perfumers evaluate the ingredient in lilac, lily-of-the-valley, orange-blossom, rose, narcissus and jasmine accords. It is also assessed in soap and personal-care fragrance systems.
