What Is Zinc Diethyldithiocarbamate (ZDEC)?
Zinc diethyldithiocarbamate, ZDEC, CAS 14324-55-1, is also known as ethylziram. This zinc dithiocarbamate is selected as a fast vulcanization accelerator in rubber and latex cure packages. It differs from zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate and other dithiocarbamate salts.
The TDS specifies initial melting point ≥172°C, heating loss ≤0.50%, zinc content 17–19%, residue on a 150 µm sieve ≤0.10%, residue on a 63 µm sieve ≤0.50% and soluble zinc <0.01%. The particle-residue limits help compare dispersion and feeding quality in the stated industrial powder.
For latex and natural or synthetic rubber, evaluate ZDEC with sulfur, activators and the actual accelerator combination. Determine scorch time, cure speed and final crosslink development through rheometer and application trials. Thiazole and sulfenamide combinations require testing of the complete package.
Selected dipped, cast and molded rubber goods need evaluation of dispersion, cure uniformity, ageing and service properties. Review the cure system for nitrosamine formation where the end use requires it. Prevent airborne powder and waterway release; the matching transport reference identifies Class 9, UN 3077.
