What Is Chromic Acid (Chromium Trioxide)?
Chromic acid (chromium trioxide, CrO3), CAS 1333-82-0, is a hexavalent chromium compound supplied as brownish-red flakes with CrO3 ≥99.80%. It is used for hard and decorative chrome plating, chromate conversion coatings and wood preservation where permitted.
Limits include sulfate ≤0.05%, sodium ≤0.02% and water-insoluble matter, as listed in the specification table.
It ships as Class 5.1 with subsidiary Classes 6.1 and 8. Chromium(VI) is a carcinogen and strong oxidizer, so use closed handling and full exposure controls. Use in the EU and some other markets requires authorization.
