What Is Chloral Hydrate?
Chloral hydrate, CAS 302-17-0, is trichloroacetaldehyde monohydrate, a geminal diol with molecular formula C2H3Cl3O2 and molecular weight 165.40 g/mol. It is supplied as transparent, colourless crystals for qualified industrial processing and chemical development.
The TDS specifies assay ≥99.0%, melting point approximately 57°C, pH 3.5–5.5, chloride ≤0.01% and burning residue ≤0.1%. The matched safety reference states the pH test on a 10% aqueous solution; retain that basis when comparing analytical results. The crystalline material is water-soluble.
In semi-bright nickel electroplating development, chloral hydrate is evaluated for bath behaviour and potential-difference control. Chemical processors can also assess its use as an intermediate or reagent in appropriately supervised synthesis. Confirm technical suitability with the full bath or process recipe and a sample trial.
