What Is Brominated Polystyrene (BPS)?
Brominated polystyrene, BPS, CAS 88497-56-7, is a brominated polymeric additive used in selected engineering plastic flame-retardant packages. Its polymer structure distinguishes it from small-molecule brominated additives and from lightly brominated synthesis-support resins.
The TDS specifies bromine 66–68%, volatile matter ≤0.30%, softening range 210–250°C and a stated thermal-stability range of 260–320°C. The thermal range is a supplied technical value, rather than a recommended continuous service or processing temperature.
Selected PA, PBT and PET formulations require evaluation of feeding, particle dispersion, melt stability and the interaction with the full additive package. Test colour, mechanical and electrical performance together with the required finished-compound fire rating. Polymer drying and residence time must suit the complete formulation.
A polymeric additive does not have one universal small-molecule molecular weight. Product comparison should focus on bromine content, physical form and the relevant softening and thermal parameters. Standard packing is 25 kg bags or 1,000 kg bulk bags; the matched SDS is non-dangerous goods for transport.
