What Is Caustic Soda Flakes?
Caustic soda flakes are solid sodium hydroxide (NaOH), CAS 1310-73-2, a strong inorganic base with molecular weight 40.00 g/mol. The flakes dissolve readily in water to form strongly alkaline solutions. Dissolution releases a lot of heat, so add the flakes slowly to water with agitation and cooling.
The industrial supply specification sets NaOH at ≥99.0%, sodium carbonate at ≤0.5%, sodium chloride at ≤0.03% and iron as Fe2O3 at ≤0.005%. These limits let buyers compare grades on alkalinity and impurity tolerance.
In mineral processing, caustic soda is used for pulp pH control and in alumina refining. It is also used in chemical manufacture, soap making through saponification and industrial cleaning.
Caustic soda is hygroscopic and corrosive. Keep the bags sealed and store them away from acids and from aluminium and other alkali-sensitive metals. Chemicals and saponification
Alkaline reagent for neutralization, chemical synthesis and soap making through saponification. The assay and impurity limits are chosen for the reaction, and dissolution heat is controlled.
Industrial cleaning
