What Is Polyhexamethylene Biguanide Hydrochloride (PHMB)?
PHMB (polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride), CAS 27083-27-8 / 32289-58-0, is a cationic polymeric biguanide biocide supplied as a 20% solution. It is used in industrial water microbial control, surface-cleaning and disinfection formulations, and leather and paper preservation.
The supply grade is a 20% solution with 19–21% solids, colourless to pale yellow. As a polymer it has no single fixed molecular weight. It is cationic and incompatible with anionic surfactants.
PHMB is toxic and ships as Class 6.1. Finished biocidal products need authorization in the destination market.
