What Is Octocrylene?
Octocrylene, CAS 6197-30-4, is an oil-soluble UVB filter supplied as a clear yellow viscous liquid. Besides absorbing UVB, it helps stabilize other filters such as avobenzone against breakdown in sunlight, and it is a good solvent for crystalline UV filters.
The TDS specifies GC assay 95–105% and purity ≥98%, specific gravity 1.045–1.055 at 25°C, refractive index 1.561–1.571 at 20°C, acidity ≤0.18 mL 0.1 mol/L NaOH and specific extinction 340–370.
SPF, UVA protection and water resistance are properties of the tested finished product, and permitted concentrations depend on the destination market. Octocrylene has suspected reproductive toxicity and aquatic hazards, and ships as UN 3082, Class 9, packing group III.
