What Is Octocrylene?
Octocrylene is an oil-soluble organic UV filter, CAS 6197-30-4, supplied as clear yellow viscous liquid. It is used in selected sun-care products and compatible UV-filter packages as a UVB-filter and photostabilizing component.
The local 2026 TDS distinguishes GC assay 95–105% from purity ≥98%. It specifies specific gravity 1.045–1.055 at 25°C, refractive index 1.561–1.571 at 20°C and acidity ≤0.18 mL using 0.1 mol/L NaOH. Specific extinction 340–370 is an extinction value; it is not a wavelength interval.
Sunscreen emulsions and daily-care formulation development should evaluate oil-phase compatibility, photostabilization, colour, texture and storage stability. SPF, UVA protection and water resistance require testing of the complete finished product. Permitted use and labeling depend on the destination market.
The current safety reference identifies suspected reproductive toxicity and severe aquatic hazards. The transport classification is Class 9, UN 3082, packing group III.
