What Is Carbomer 940 / 980?
Carbomer 940 and 980, CAS 9003-01-4, are crosslinked polyacrylic acid thickeners. After neutralization they form clear, high-viscosity gels with good suspending power, used in gels, creams, lotions and styling products.
At 0.5% neutralized, Carbomer 940 gives 40,000–70,000 mPa·s and Carbomer 980 40,000–60,000 mPa·s. The 0.2% viscosity and light-transmission values are listed separately.
Disperse the powder in water before neutralizing. Salts and long high-shear mixing reduce viscosity. It is not regulated as dangerous goods; control airborne powder.
