What Is Benzoic Acid?
Benzoic acid, CAS 65-85-0, is an aromatic carboxylic acid used as a food and feed preservative, and as a raw material for sodium benzoate, plasticizers, alkyd resins and other chemicals.
Two grades are available: food grade with at least 99.5% assay on a dried basis, and technical grade with at least 98%. Each has its own impurity limits.
It is not regulated as dangerous goods under DOT, IMDG or IATA. Control dust and avoid eye and skin contact. Food use requires a grade and documents that meet the rules of the destination market.
