What Is Trimellitic Anhydride (TMA)?
Trimellitic anhydride, commonly abbreviated TMA, is an aromatic anhydride intermediate identified by CAS 552-30-7 and EC 209-008-0. It is supplied as white flakes or pastilles with molecular formula C9H4O5 and molecular weight 192.13 g/mol. Its anhydride and carboxyl functionality supports selected ester and polymer synthesis.
The supply specification sets anhydride content at ≥98.0%, acid value at ≥873 mg KOH/g, melting point at ≥164°C and molten colour at ≤120 Pt-Co. Phthalic anhydride is limited to ≤50 mg/kg for the excellent grade or ≤100 mg/kg for the qualified grade. Keep these separate grade limits when comparing purchasing specifications and batch certificates.
TMA is evaluated in trimellitate plasticizer synthesis, including TOTM development, and in polyester or alkyd resins for coatings and wire enamels. Other technically supervised uses include epoxy curing and selected synthetic-lubricant or chemical-intermediate routes. Match purity and colour requirements to the intended reaction and downstream product.
Standard packing includes 25 kg paper-composite bags or 500 kg and 1,000 kg lined woven bags. Protect the material from moisture because the anhydride hydrolyses in contact with water. The matched solid reference is non-dangerous goods for transport, but the substance can cause serious eye injury, skin sensitization and respiratory allergy; effective exposure control is essential.
