What Is Benzyl Benzoate?
Benzyl benzoate is the benzyl ester of benzoic acid, identified by CAS 120-51-4 and EC 204-402-9. Also known as benzoic acid benzyl ester, it is supplied as a colourless oily liquid with molecular formula C14H12O2 and molecular weight 212.24 g/mol.
The TDS specifies purity ≥99.0%, acidity ≤0.3 mg KOH/g, refractive index 1.568–1.570, density 1.118–1.122 g/cm3, sulphated ash ≤0.1% and water ≤0.2%. Its melting region is around 17°C, so crystallization in cooler conditions is distinct from contamination; assess recovery under the agreed handling procedure.
Fragrance formulators evaluate benzyl benzoate as a low-volatility solvent and fixative. Textile-auxiliary developers assess it in compatible levelling and related systems, while specialty-material developers evaluate solvency and plasticizing behaviour. Validate performance in the actual formulation rather than assigning a universal application dose.
