What Is N-Vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP)?
N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (NVP), CAS 88-12-0, is a reactive monomer with a vinyl group and a polar lactam ring. It is the monomer for polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and its copolymers, and a reactive diluent in UV-curable coatings, inks and adhesives.
The supply specification requires NVP ≥99.5%, with α-pyrrolidone and water each ≤0.2%, and also controls density, crystallization point and APHA colour. As a reactive monomer, it should be stored under the temperature and stabilizer conditions stated for the supplied grade.
NVP is not regulated as dangerous goods under DOT, IMDG or IATA, but it has significant occupational hazards: it is harmful on acute exposure, causes serious eye damage, is a suspected carcinogen and can affect the liver on repeated exposure. Follow the controls in the SDS.
